Paraphrasing

Paraphrasing

Paraphrasing
is using your own words to report someone else’s material or ideas.

A paraphrase allows you to use another writer’s material to support a point you are making in your own work without using the other writer’s exact words.

You will probably use paraphrasing when you want to change the style or the language used in the original, either to make it easier to understand or to make it fit better into your own piece of writing.

Unlike a summary, a paraphrase is usually about the same length as the original, but both the words and the sentence structure of the original must be changed.

Comparing Paraphrase and Summary

Paraphrase
Summary
· Reports your understanding to your reader
· Reports your understanding to your reader
· Reports a relatively short passage
· Records a passage of any length
· Records every point in the passage
· Selects and condenses (shorter but the same information), recording only the main ideas
· Records these points consecutively
· Changes the order or ideas when necessary
· Includes no interpretation
· Explains and (if the writer wishes) interprets

How to Write a Paraphrase

§ Make sure that you understand the source passage.
§ Substitute (to use something new or different) your own words for those of the source passage; look for synonyms that carry the same meaning as the original words.
§ Rearrange your sentences so that they read smoothly. Sentence structures, even sentence order, in the paraphrase must not be based on the original. A good paraphrase, like a good summary, should stand by itself.

Writing a Good Paraphrase

§ Look up difficult words in the dictionary.
§ Think of what they mean and how they are used together.
§ Consider how the sentences are formed and how they fit into the context of the entire paragraph.
§ Then, to test your understanding, write it all out.

Rearrange your sentences so that they read smoothly. - A lot of people actually make mistake of not doing this pretty often. It's better to read out loud paraphrased text. You can also use summarize it for me. It actually saves a lot of time so I highly suggest trying it out! Best of luck!
