Stage of the Writing Process

Step 1: Understanding the task- what does the writing assignment ask you to write about? Who is your audience?

Step 2: Gathering data-from sources or your personal experiences

Step 3: Invention-techniques to help you come up with what you are going to write (e.g. freewriting, listing, outlining etc)

Step 4: Drafting- start writing by following what you plan to write. The invention techniques facilitate your work of drafting. Do not need to worry about grammatical errors in this stage. Focus on the content.

Step 5: Revision-rewrite in order to make the draft better-by both global and local levels.

Global level-reshape your thesis, add or delete some evidence
Local level-recheck sentence level

Step 6: Editing-Revise at sentence level for style. Revise for correctness: grammar, punctuation and spelling, etc.
